Grade 4 Titanium: Strength, Corrosion Resistance and Medical Applications
- 186

Grade 4 titanium overview. Grade 4 (UNS R50700) is an unalloyed titanium grade. Selection begins with the required product form and governing specification, then the drawing, delivery condition, service environment and inspection evidence. A material grade alone does not establish the performance or regulatory status of a finished component.
Choose the standard by product form
| Form | Relevant material specification | What the buyer should confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Rod and bar | ASTM B348 | Grade, size, condition, applicable edition and certificate. |
| Wire | ASTM B863 | Diameter, condition, coil or straight length and acceptance tests. |
| Strip, sheet and plate | ASTM B265 | Thickness, flatness, condition and surface requirements. |
| Material ordered for surgical implant manufacture | ASTM F67, where the project calls for it | Applicable edition, material test records and the device manufacturer’s additional qualification requirements. |
What Grade 4 can and cannot establish
Grade 4 is used when a commercially pure titanium option with a higher strength requirement is considered. The exact acceptance values must come from the contracted standard edition and the supplied heat or lot certificate. Corrosion suitability depends on the actual chemical medium, concentration, temperature, fabrication route and exposure time; a generic statement about acid or seawater resistance is insufficient for design approval.
For medical work, ASTM F67 describes material requirements for unalloyed titanium used to manufacture surgical implants. Meeting a material specification does not, by itself, establish biocompatibility of a finished device, clinical lifetime, MRI conditions or regulatory clearance. Those claims require device-specific design controls, tests and supporting records.

RFQ and evidence checklist
Provide the grade, form, drawing and dimensions, condition, surface requirement, applicable standard and revision, intended service, quantity and requested material test certificate. Specify additional chemical, mechanical, dimensional, surface or traceability checks when the component design requires them. Review the relevant rod, wire or foil family and send a technical RFQ.
Source and limit: The linked ASTM pages identify the scope of each material standard. This article does not quote an acceptance table or claim that a particular supplied lot meets it; verify the contracted edition and lot documents before use.
Frequently asked questions
Does Grade 4 titanium automatically qualify a medical implant?
No. Material conformance and finished-device qualification are separate requirements. The device manufacturer must assess its design, processing, tests and regulatory route.
Which standard applies to Grade 4 foil?
ASTM B265 covers titanium strip, sheet and plate. Confirm that the ordered foil form and thickness are covered by the agreed edition and purchase specification.
