Is Grade 4 Titanium Wire the perfect balance of strength and biocompatibility?
- Gr4 titanium wire

Grade 4 titanium wire selection. Grade 4 (UNS R50700) is an unalloyed titanium wire option for projects that require a higher-strength commercially pure titanium grade. Selection still depends on wire diameter, condition, surface, forming route and verified lot evidence. “Biocompatible” is not a universal guarantee for a finished medical device.
Material standard and order details
ASTM B863 includes Grade 4 titanium wire. State the contracted edition, wire diameter and tolerance, coil or straight length, delivery condition, surface acceptance and quantity. Ask for a material certificate tied to the supplied heat or lot. Do not interchange a wire standard with an unrelated aerospace specification merely because both mention titanium.
Strength, forming and application context
The project’s specified tensile requirement and supplied-lot result should control strength acceptance. Wire drawing and heat treatment change the balance between strength and formability. For fasteners, springs or welded components, the finished geometry, process qualification and fatigue assessment are separate from raw-wire certification. Corrosion suitability requires the actual medium and temperature, including effects of joints and deposits.
| Use case | Additional qualification question |
|---|---|
| Precision forming | Can the specified condition meet the bend and dimensional requirements? |
| Aerospace component | What drawing, process specification and traceability does the customer require? |
| Medical-device material | Does the order require ASTM F67, and what finished-device tests are required? |
ASTM F67 addresses unalloyed titanium material for surgical implant manufacture. It does not establish clinical results, biological safety or MRI conditions for a finished device. The previous article’s numerical hospital follow-up claim and unconditional MRI statement lacked identifiable supporting evidence and are not retained.

Frequently asked questions
Does Grade 4 titanium wire automatically qualify an implant?
No. Material conformity and finished-device qualification are different requirements.
What should the supplier quote specify?
Specify grade, wire geometry, condition, standard edition, surface, traceability and required tests.
