Grade 4 Titanium Foil: Features and Buying Guide

Gr4 Titanium Foil

Grade 4 titanium foil may be considered when a thin unalloyed titanium product with specified strength and surface requirements is needed. Select the material using the actual component drawing, fabrication route and service conditions; grade alone does not establish fatigue life, corrosion resistance or manufacturing capability.

Material and specification

Grade 4 is unalloyed titanium, UNS R50700. ASTM B265 covers annealed titanium strip, sheet and plate, including Grade 4. For an order described as foil, confirm that its thickness, form and condition fall within the agreed specification and edition. Verify chemical and mechanical limits against the contractual document and relevant material certificate.

Compared with Grade 1 or Grade 2, Grade 4 is commonly selected for higher specified strength. Formability depends on the actual material condition and forming method; do not apply one percentage difference to every thickness and lot.

Define the foil for its intended use

Buying factorWhat to agree
DimensionsThickness, width, length or coil, dimensional tolerances and edge requirements.
Condition and finishDelivery condition, cleanliness, surface finish and packaging.
FormingBend geometry, rolling direction, tooling and acceptance of representative trials.
DocumentationSpecification edition, lot identification and required inspection records.

Minimum tensile values, hardness, elongation and tolerances must be taken from the agreed standard and product condition. Fatigue life and impact resistance require separate evidence for the relevant geometry and loading.

Application and process boundaries

Assess corrosion using the medium, concentration, temperature, contaminants and joints. Cleaning, forming and welding procedures must be validated for the component. Any production tolerance, equipment capability or delivery quantity should be confirmed for the particular order.

For medical device manufacture, select the appropriate material specification and confirm the finished device’s design, biological assessment and regulatory requirements separately. A Grade 4 designation does not establish clinical performance or MRI safety.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grade 4 foil automatically suitable for every high-load component?

No. Evaluate thickness, geometry, loads, fatigue and applicable tests.

Does ASTM B265 cover every possible foil order?

Confirm the ordered form, dimensions and condition against the agreed edition.
