R60702 Zirconium Foil: Nuclear Application Specification Limits
- UNS R60702 Zirconium Foil

UNS R60702 identifies unalloyed zirconium. This designation alone does not establish that a particular foil is qualified for a nuclear application. The applicable product specification, chemistry, traceability, testing and project acceptance must be established for the actual component and order.
R60702 foil and product specifications
ASTM B551/B551M covers zirconium and zirconium alloy strip, sheet and plate, including R60702. Check the contracted edition and confirm whether the ordered foil dimensions, condition and tolerances fall within its scope or require an agreed supplementary specification. A product title or a general grade description is not a certificate for a supplied lot.
Why nuclear projects require separate review
Nuclear service can impose application-specific requirements for material designation, impurities, manufacturing controls, traceability, testing, inspection and approval. The project owner and responsible engineering authority must identify the appropriate specification and qualification route. Do not assume that commercial R60702 has the impurity limits or irradiation performance required for a particular reactor component.
Reactor material selection depends on the component design, environment and service requirements. A foil identification does not establish suitability for fuel cladding, control rod assemblies or other safety-related parts, and does not establish component service life.
What to include in an inquiry
| Requirement | Information to provide |
|---|---|
| Material | Grade, product form, specification and required edition. |
| Dimensions | Thickness, width, length or coil, tolerance and surface condition. |
| Verification | Applicable inspection, chemistry and traceability requirements. |
| Project | Application, acceptance criteria and required documentation. |
Agree inspection and documents before ordering. Any material certificate applies to the identified material and order; qualification of the finished component is a separate decision.
Frequently asked questions
Is all R60702 zirconium foil nuclear grade?
No. The grade designation alone does not establish compliance with project-specific nuclear requirements.
Does ASTM B551 cover every foil thickness?
Check the dimensions and product form against the agreed edition and order requirements.
