Zr702 zirconium foil may be evaluated for chemical reactor components where the material, operating conditions and component design are compatible. The foil grade alone cannot prevent leaks, establish reactor safety or guarantee a particular service life. The responsible engineer must assess the complete equipment and process.
Material identity and product specification
Zr702 is commonly identified as unalloyed zirconium, UNS R60702. ASTM B551/B551M covers zirconium and zirconium alloy strip, sheet and plate, including R60702. Confirm the contracted edition and whether the ordered foil form, thickness and condition are covered. Specify dimensions, tolerances, surface, delivery condition, traceability and required inspection documents.
Assess corrosion in the actual reactor
Corrosion behavior depends on each chemical, concentration, temperature, pressure, impurities, flow, deposits and exposure time. Consider cleaning, startup, shutdown, joints, crevices and changes in the process. A result in one acid or a published corrosion rate cannot establish compatibility with a different mixture or operating condition. Fluoride-containing environments require particular attention because they can attack zirconium’s protective surface film.
