R60702 Zirconium Foil for Acid Service: Selection Limits

UNS R60702 zirconium foil may be considered for components exposed to certain chemical environments. Suitability depends on the complete medium, temperature, exposure and component design. A grade name alone does not establish a corrosion rate or a service life for an acid-service component.

Define the actual environment

Identify each acid, its concentration, operating temperature, pressure, impurities, dissolved gases and flow. Consider startup, shutdown and cleaning conditions as well as normal operation. Mixtures and contaminants can change corrosion behavior, and a result for one solution or temperature should not be transferred automatically to another.

Zirconium forms a surface oxide. That does not make it immune to corrosion. Fluoride-containing environments require particular attention because they can attack the protective oxide. Assess crevices, deposits, welds and dissimilar-metal contacts in the actual component.

Material and product form

R60702 identifies unalloyed zirconium. ASTM B551/B551M covers zirconium and zirconium alloy strip, sheet and plate, including R60702. Confirm the contracted edition and whether the required foil form, thickness and condition are covered. Specify thickness and tolerance, width, length or coil, surface and delivery condition.

Testing and documentation

ItemWhat to agree
Corrosion evidenceRepresentative medium, temperature, exposure, specimen and test method.
FabricationForming, joining, cleaning and inspection requirements.
AcceptanceDimensions, surface, chemistry and any required mechanical tests.
RecordsMaterial identification, lot traceability and agreed inspection documents.

Where the consequences of failure are significant, use a qualified engineer to determine design margins, corrosion testing and inspection intervals. A material certificate does not establish the lifetime or approval of a fabricated component.

Frequently asked questions

Will R60702 resist every strong acid?

No. Selection depends on the full chemistry and operating conditions, including impurities.

Can a generic corrosion rate predict component life?

Not on its own. Geometry, fabrication, environment and actual test evidence must be considered.
