Machining R60705 Zirconium Bars: Process and Safety Considerations
- R60705 Zirconium Bars

Machining R60705 zirconium bar requires an approved process for the material, workpiece and equipment. Tooling, cutting conditions, chip handling and inspection should be established through a site-specific risk assessment and process trials. A generic cutting-speed table does not establish a safe or qualified process.
Material and drawing requirements
UNS R60705 identifies a zirconium-niobium alloy. ASTM B550/B550M covers zirconium and zirconium alloy bar and wire, including R60705. Agree the material specification and edition, bar dimensions and condition, surface, traceability and required records. The finished part’s drawing and inspection criteria are separate from the raw material specification.
Plan the machining operation
| Factor | Information to establish |
|---|---|
| Workpiece | Bar condition, geometry, clamping, tolerance and surface acceptance. |
| Tooling | Tool material, geometry, condition and the tool manufacturer’s recommendations. |
| Process | Machine, operation, cutting conditions and process trials. |
| Inspection | Dimension, surface integrity, cleanliness, traceability and required records. |
Tool wear, heat, chatter and surface damage can affect part quality. Cutting settings and achievable finish depend on the operation, equipment and condition; verify them against the drawing and a qualified procedure.
Chip and fire hazards
Fine zirconium particles and dust can present a serious fire or explosion hazard; the hazard depends on the material’s form and handling conditions. Plan chip and dust control, collection, storage and emergency response with qualified safety personnel, the material safety data sheet, equipment guidance and applicable local requirements before machining.
Do not assume that water or a generic coolant will extinguish a zirconium fire. Zirconium powder can continue burning under water. The site emergency plan must specify suitable response and extinguishing arrangements for the actual material and operation. This article is not a machining or fire-response procedure.
Frequently asked questions
Can one cutting speed be used for all R60705 bars?
No. Establish settings for the workpiece, tool, machine, operation and validated procedure.
Does a bar certificate qualify the machined part?
No. The part must meet its drawing, inspection and application requirements.
