Grade 5 Titanium Foil: Properties and Application Selection

Grade 5 titanium foil may be considered when a thin Ti-6Al-4V product with specified strength and dimensions is required. Selection must account for the intended component, processing and service; the grade alone does not guarantee operating temperature, fatigue life or a production tolerance.
Material and specification
Grade 5 is Ti-6Al-4V, UNS R56400. ASTM B265 covers annealed titanium strip, sheet and plate, including Grade 5. Verify that the required foil form, thickness and condition fall within the agreed edition. Specify thickness, width, tolerance, delivery form, surface and lot documentation.
Acceptance values for chemistry and mechanical properties must be taken from the contracted standard and the delivered-lot records. A value for bar, a different thickness or another material condition is not automatically an acceptance value for foil.

Foil may be evaluated for structures, protective components or other fabricated parts, but any weight saving, thermal performance or corrosion life must be demonstrated for the design. A high melting point does not establish an allowable service temperature.
Processing and regulated uses
Rolling, heat treatment, cleaning and joining affect foil condition. Confirm the required procedure and acceptance by material and representative trials; do not assume a fixed production tolerance or weld efficiency. For aerospace or medical applications, identify the applicable material specification and separate component qualification. A material certificate does not establish clinical performance or MRI safety.
