Grade 1 Titanium Wire Surface Roughness: Specification and Inspection
- Gr1 Titanium Wire

Grade 1 titanium wire surface requirements should be set for the actual component and processing route. A universal roughness value cannot guarantee weld quality, corrosion life, electrical performance or medical-device biocompatibility.
Define the required surface
The purchase specification should identify the relevant surface finish, permitted defects, cleanliness and any numerical roughness criterion. State the measurement parameter, method, sampling location, instrument and acceptance procedure where a value is required. Wire diameter and curvature can affect how a measurement is made and interpreted.
Match inspection to application
| Application | Questions for the design and order |
|---|---|
| Welding or joining | What cleanliness, surface condition, consumable specification and procedure qualification are required? |
| Corrosive service | What medium, temperature, surface condition, crevices and corrosion evidence apply? |
| Precision forming | What surface defects, friction behavior and forming tests affect the process? |
| Medical-device component | What device-specific surface, cleaning, biological evaluation and validation are required? |
Receiving and verification
Agree the inspection plan, lot identification, sampling and required report before ordering. A roughness result is only one part of surface acceptance and does not prove absence of contamination or defects. Where the wire is further bent, welded or polished, evaluate the final component after those processes.
Frequently asked questions
Does a lower Ra automatically mean a medical device is biocompatible?
No. Biological evaluation applies to the finished device and its intended contact.
Does one surface finish guarantee a corrosion life?
No. The material, environment, component geometry and service conditions require assessment.
