Grade 5 Titanium Rod: Properties, Processing and Applications

Grade 5 titanium rod is Ti-6Al-4V, UNS R56400. It may be selected for a machined or formed component when its specified mechanical properties and condition meet the design. The rod grade alone does not establish fatigue life, safe service temperature or approval for a finished part.
Material specification
ASTM B348/B348M covers annealed titanium bars and billets including Grade 5. Specify the contracted edition, size and tolerance, delivery condition, finish, quantity and documentation. Check chemical and mechanical results against the agreed requirements and delivered-lot certificate.
Grade 5 ELI is a distinct material designation with its own requirements. For surgical implant material, ASTM F136 describes wrought Ti-6Al-4V ELI, UNS R56401. A generic Grade 5 bar certificate does not establish conformance to that standard.
Processing and inspection

Processing parameters, dimensional tolerances and test capability must be agreed for the actual order. Vacuum processing does not automatically remove all impurities or guarantee a defect-free product.
Application boundaries
Aerospace, industrial and medical components require different specifications and qualifications. Corrosion depends on the full medium and temperature; fatigue depends on geometry, surface, load and environment. In a medical application, the device manufacturer must separately assess biological safety, clinical use, MRI conditions and applicable regulations.
