Grade 2 Titanium Wire Fatigue Strength: Testing and Selection

Grade 2 titanium wire fatigue performance depends on the supplied material, specimen geometry, surface and cyclic loading. A single tensile result or generic percentage does not establish fatigue strength or service life for a wire component.

What a fatigue result describes

A fatigue test applies repeated loading to a defined specimen. To interpret a reported result, check the stress or strain range, stress ratio, loading mode and frequency, number of cycles, specimen geometry and the failure or run-out criterion. An S–N curve summarizes results for a defined test population and conditions; do not extrapolate one point to every application.

Material specification versus test method

ASTM B863 is a titanium and titanium-alloy wire material specification, not a general substitute for a fatigue test procedure. For an appropriate constant-amplitude axial specimen test, ASTM E466 may be relevant within its stated scope; verify specimen geometry, environment, edition and project requirements. A specimen result does not by itself qualify a full component.

Factors to assess

  • Wire grade, heat or lot, diameter, condition and processing history.
  • Surface scratches, bending, joins and local stress concentrations.
  • Mean stress, loading amplitude, operating temperature and chemical environment.
  • Test sampling, measurement method, acceptance criteria and statistical scatter.

Design and purchasing

Define the actual cyclic duty and test evidence with the designer. For a wire inquiry, specify standard and edition, diameter, condition, surface and traceability. Where a finished part is formed or joined, evaluate representative components after the relevant process.

Frequently asked questions

Can tensile strength alone predict fatigue life?

No. Cyclic behavior requires appropriate evidence for the material and loading conditions.

Does one laboratory result guarantee service life?

No. The test conditions, specimen variation and component environment must be considered.
