Grade 1 vs Grade 5 Titanium Rods: Material Comparison
- Gr1 Titanium Rod, Gr5 Titanium rod

Grade 1 and Grade 5 titanium rods serve different design needs. Grade 1 is unalloyed titanium; Grade 5 is Ti-6Al-4V. The appropriate choice depends on the strength, fabrication, environment and documentation required for the particular component.
Grade and specification
Grade 1 is UNS R50250. Grade 5 is UNS R56400, a titanium alloy nominally containing aluminum and vanadium. ASTM B348/B348M covers annealed titanium and titanium alloy bars and billets, including both grades. Specify the required edition and confirm grade, dimensions, condition and applicable tests. Do not assume that a general grade label meets a different aerospace or medical specification.
Compare the design requirements
| Factor | Grade 1 | Grade 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Unalloyed titanium | Ti-6Al-4V alloy |
| Mechanical selection | Evaluate required strength and ductility for the condition. | Evaluate required strength, fatigue and processing for the condition. |
| Fabrication | Verify forming, machining and joining for the design. | Verify forming, machining and joining for the alloy and condition. |
| Environment | Check the actual chemistry, temperature and exposure. | Check the actual chemistry, temperature and exposure. |
Grade 5 is commonly selected for higher-strength requirements, but numerical acceptance values depend on the standard, product size and condition. Obtain relevant properties from the contracted edition and lot records. Neither grade guarantees a fixed fatigue life or resistance to every chemical medium.
Application and documentation
For an inquiry, provide grade, specification and edition, rod diameter and length, tolerance, condition, surface and inspection requirements. For medical or aerospace components, identify the separate material and finished-part requirements. A general industrial rod certificate does not establish clinical suitability or component certification.
Frequently asked questions
Are Grade 1 and Grade 5 interchangeable?
No. Compare the drawing, material specification and service requirements before substitution.
Does Grade 1 guarantee medical-device approval?
No. Material and finished-device requirements must be evaluated separately.
