UNS R60705 Zirconium Wire: Standards and Procurement Guide
- UNS R60705 Zirconium Wire

UNS R60705 identifies a zirconium–niobium alloy that can be specified in wire form for an agreed industrial application. Selection requires the applicable product standard, dimensions, condition and service requirements; a designation alone does not guarantee corrosion life, nuclear qualification or medical-device suitability.
Identify the correct product standard
ASTM B550/B550M covers zirconium and zirconium alloy bar and wire, including R60705, within its scope. ASTM B551/B551M covers strip, sheet and plate; it should not be described as the bar and wire standard. Specify the contracted edition, wire diameter, tolerance, delivery condition and any supplementary requirements in the purchase order.
Confirm composition and mechanical acceptance against the applicable edition and the certificate for the supplied lot. A value taken from another product form, condition or test cannot automatically be applied to the wire ordered.
Assess the service environment
For chemical processing, identify the medium, concentration, temperature, pressure, flow, impurities, fabrication and exposure. Corrosion performance varies with these conditions; there is no universal corrosion rate or immunity to pitting for every environment. Where failure consequences are significant, the responsible engineer should evaluate relevant evidence and representative material tests.
| Order detail | Information to establish |
|---|---|
| Identity | UNS R60705, product form and agreed specification and edition. |
| Wire | Diameter, tolerance, surface, delivery form and condition. |
| Service | Medium, temperature, loads and planned fabrication. |
| Records | Lot identification, agreed inspections and material certificate. |
Nuclear and medical applications
A general industrial specification or material certificate does not by itself qualify a nuclear component. The project authority must identify its material specification, traceability, inspection and component qualification requirements. For medical devices, the manufacturer must separately establish the applicable material and finished-device safety requirements; a wire grade does not establish biocompatibility, MRI conditions or regulatory clearance.
Frequently asked questions
Is ASTM B551/B551M the zirconium wire specification?
No. It addresses strip, sheet and plate. For a bar or wire inquiry, consider ASTM B550/B550M and the contracted project requirements.
Are a fixed minimum quantity and lead time guaranteed?
No. Confirm quantity, availability, required documentation and delivery schedule for the specific order.
