ASTM B265 Titanium Sheet, Strip and Plate: Scope, Grade Selection and RFQ Guide
ASTM B265 is the reference point for specifying titanium and titanium alloy sheet, strip, and plate. It should be read together with the selected grade, product form, dimensions, delivery condition, inspection requirements, and purchase order. This guide explains how to turn an ASTM B265 request into a clear material inquiry without mixing sheet, strip, plate, wire, or rod requirements.
1. What ASTM B265 is used to define
For a B265 inquiry, the material form and grade must be stated first. The standard reference does not replace the grade designation or the buyer’s dimensional and certification requirements. A complete request normally identifies the titanium grade, sheet/strip/plate form, thickness, width, length or coil condition, surface condition, quantity, and required inspection documents.
2. Grade and product-form selection
Commercially pure titanium grades are selected according to the required balance of formability, corrosion resistance, and strength. Alloy grades are selected when the design requires a different strength or performance envelope. Product form matters: a sheet or foil inquiry should not be substituted with a wire or rod specification simply because the grade name is similar.
| RFQ field | What to state | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Grade | Exact grade and standard reference | Prevents a grade substitution |
| Form | Sheet, strip, plate, or foil-like thin section | Controls processing and inspection route |
| Dimensions | Thickness, width, length or coil details | Determines feasibility and yield |
| Condition | Annealed or other agreed delivery condition | Links the order to the required properties |
| Documents | Material test report, certificate, inspection plan | Defines the evidence supplied with the lot |
3. Inspection and delivery documentation
Ask the supplier to identify the applicable specification revision, heat or lot traceability, chemical and mechanical test records, dimensions and tolerances, surface inspection, and any additional testing agreed in the purchase order. The document list should match the actual product form and delivery condition.
4. Related Titanium Valley material pages
For examples of the product-form information used in an inquiry, see Gr1 titanium foil, AMS 4902 Gr2 titanium foil, and AMS 4901 Gr4 titanium foil. These links are product references; the final B265 scope, revision, dimensions, and documents must be confirmed for each order.
5. FAQ
Does ASTM B265 alone define the complete purchase?
No. The request still needs the grade, product form, dimensions, delivery condition, quantity, and inspection documents.
Can a B265 sheet request be replaced by a rod or wire standard?
No. The product form and applicable specification must match the part being purchased.
What should be confirmed before release?
Confirm the current specification revision, agreed tolerances, traceability, test records, surface requirements, and delivery documents.
6. RFQ checklist
Send the grade, ASTM B265 reference and revision if required, form, dimensions, quantity, delivery condition, surface requirement, inspection level, certificate requirements, destination, and requested delivery date. For an inquiry, use the Titanium Valley RFQ page.
