Grade 2 Titanium Foil for Medical Devices: Materials and Requirements

Gr2 Titanium Foil

Grade 2 titanium foil may be considered as starting material for a medical-device component when the device manufacturer has defined the intended use, material requirements and qualification plan. Grade identity alone does not establish biological safety, clinical performance or MRI conditions.

Grade, form and specification

Grade 2, UNS R50400, is an unalloyed titanium grade. ASTM F67 covers Grade 2 strip and sheet among the specified forms used to manufacture surgical implants. Confirm the ordered foil thickness and product form against the required specification and edition. The agreed certificate should identify the supplied lot, condition and ordered material requirements.

Design and fabrication

Foil geometry, thickness, tolerance, surface condition and forming processes influence the component. The device manufacturer should define cutting, forming, joining and cleaning requirements and validate the process on representative material. A general material tensile value does not establish the forming limit or fatigue life of a thin component.

Biological evaluation, MRI and applications

Consider the intended contact type and duration, surface treatments, processing residues, sterilization and packaging in a risk-based biological evaluation. Do not assume no ion release or a guaranteed tissue response. MRI safety and labeling depend on the finished device and its conditions of use; a non-ferromagnetic material designation alone does not establish that assessment.

Information to include with an inquiry

  • Material grade, applicable specification and edition, thickness, width and tolerances.
  • Required condition, surface, packaging, quantity and traceability.
  • Inspection, documentation and additional tests agreed for the order.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Grade 2 certificate qualify a finished implant?

No. The manufacturer must separately establish finished-device performance, biological evaluation and regulatory requirements.

Can the same foil be used for every medical component?

No. Material and processing must be evaluated for the specific device and its intended use.

For material-standard context, read our ASTM F67 material and documentation guide. The manufacturer must evaluate the finished device separately.
