Grade 5 Titanium Foil for Medical Devices: Material Selection
- Gr5 Titanium Foil

Grade 5 titanium alloy foil may be considered for a medical-device component when the specified alloy, form, condition and finished-device requirements are appropriate. Grade 5 and Grade 5 ELI are distinct material designations; neither designation alone proves compliance with an implant material standard or device authorization.
Differentiate Grade 5 and Grade 5 ELI
Grade 5 is Ti-6Al-4V, commonly designated UNS R56400. ASTM F1472 addresses wrought Ti-6Al-4V, UNS R56400, for surgical implant applications. ASTM F136 addresses the extra-low-interstitial Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy, UNS R56401. Their chemical and processing requirements differ; specify the correct grade and contractual edition and verify the actual product form and thickness.
Material, surface and inspection
State foil thickness, width and tolerances, condition, surface requirements, traceability and the inspection documents required by the order. Forming, cutting and cleaning can affect a thin component; material properties and acceptance criteria must be taken from the applicable specification and representative supplied lot, not from an unspecified generic value.
Medical-device qualification
The device manufacturer must assess loading and fatigue, biological response, corrosion, cleaning and sterilization for the finished component and its intended contact. Material grade alone cannot guarantee long-term implant performance, a particular tissue response or MRI safety. MRI conditions require finished-device evaluation and labeling.
Frequently asked questions
Is ordinary Grade 5 automatically equivalent to Grade 5 ELI?
No. The designations and applicable material requirements differ.
Does an F136 or F1472 material certificate approve a finished device?
No. It addresses material requirements; finished-device verification and regulatory obligations are separate.
