Nickel 201 vs Nickel 270: Material Selection Guide

Nickel 201 vs. Nickel 270: Which Nickel Grade Should You Choose

Nickel 201 and Nickel 270 are different nickel material designations. Selection depends on the required composition, product form, temperature, properties and documentation. Verify the applicable specification and the measured chemistry of the supplied lot rather than relying on a grade name or an assumed purity.

Material identity

Nickel 201 is the low-carbon nickel grade UNS N02201. Nickel 270 is identified as UNS N02270. The Nickel Institute describes Nickel 270 as a high-purity, powder-produced nickel used in certain electronic applications. Exact chemistry limits and product requirements depend on the contracted specification and edition; a quoted purity value for one data sheet is not proof of the composition of every lot.

Temperature and product standards

For Nickel 201 foil, ASTM B162 covers rolled nickel plate, sheet and strip, including UNS N02201. Confirm whether the ordered thickness and form are within the agreed edition. Do not assume that the same specification automatically covers Nickel 270 or every wire and bar product; identify a suitable specification for the ordered grade and form.

Nickel 201 is a low-carbon alternative to Nickel 200 in elevated-temperature applications, but a grade designation is not a blanket service-temperature rating. Evaluate the atmosphere, stress and duration using applicable material data and design requirements. Conductivity, magnetic properties and corrosion behavior also depend on material condition and test conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nickel 270 automatically better for every application?

No. Compare the specified chemistry, product form, performance and cost for the actual application.

Does a catalog purity claim certify an order?

No. Use the agreed specification and lot-specific analysis or other required records.
