Grade 2 vs Grade 5 Titanium Wire: Selection and Applications
- Gr5 titanium wire

Grade 2 and Grade 5 titanium wire represent different material choices. Grade 2 is unalloyed titanium; Grade 5 is the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Choose between them using the applicable specification, material condition, component requirements and supporting test evidence.
Grade and specification
Grade 2 is UNS R50400 and Grade 5 is UNS R56400. ASTM B863 covers both grades as titanium wire within its scope. State the required edition, dimensions, condition and inspection in the order. Grade 5 ELI is a separate designation and should not be assumed interchangeable with Grade 5.
| Selection factor | Grade 2 | Grade 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Material identity | Unalloyed titanium, UNS R50400. | Ti-6Al-4V alloy, UNS R56400. |
| Mechanical requirements | Check the specified condition and lot test results. | Check the specified condition and lot test results. |
| Fabrication | Evaluate forming or joining for the actual wire and component. | Evaluate forming or joining for the actual wire and component. |
| Corrosion | Assess the actual medium and environment. | Assess the actual medium and environment. |
Strength and fabrication
The grades have different alloy systems, but numerical strength and ductility depend on product condition and applicable requirements. Compare values for the same form and relevant test conditions; tensile strength alone does not establish fatigue life or allowable load. Run representative forming or welding trials and agree the appropriate procedure, inspection and acceptance criteria.
Temperature and corrosion
Specify the operating temperature, duration, stresses and chemical environment. Neither grade is automatically immune to brittle fracture at cryogenic temperature or corrosion in all acids and seawater. Use data and tests relevant to the actual component; do not assign a universal safe temperature or service life from the grade name.
Medical and aerospace requirements
These applications may require material specifications, processing controls and device or component qualification beyond a general industrial wire certificate. The finished-device manufacturer must evaluate biological safety and regulatory requirements where applicable. A grade designation alone is not implant approval.
Frequently asked questions
Is Grade 5 always the best choice?
No. Selection depends on the design, condition, fabrication and environment.
Does ASTM B863 alone approve a medical device?
No. Medical material requirements and finished-device qualification must be addressed separately.
