UNS R60705 Zirconium Wire in Industrial Manufacturing
- UNS R60705 Zirconium Wire

UNS R60705, often called zirconium 705, is a zirconium-niobium alloy. Wire in this grade may be evaluated for industrial components when the material specification, fabrication and intended service are appropriate. A grade designation does not automatically establish nuclear or medical suitability.
Match product form and standard
ASTM B550/B550M covers zirconium and zirconium alloy bar and wire, including R60705. Specify the edition, diameter, tolerance, delivery form and condition, and agree the lot certificate and any additional tests. A sheet or tube specification does not automatically apply to wire.
Assess potential components
| Possible use | Selection work |
|---|---|
| Chemical-service wire forms | Evaluate medium, concentration, temperature, flow, crevices and exposure. |
| Springs or formed parts | Confirm wire condition, forming trials, geometry and cyclic-load testing. |
| Fastener or mesh feedstock | Agree forming process, dimensions, surface and finished acceptance. |
| Specialized projects | Confirm project-specific material rules, traceability and qualification. |
Fluoride-containing environments require particular caution. Do not assume a fixed corrosion rate, immunity to hydrogen effects or suitability for every chloride service.
Processing and inspection
Wire drawing, cleaning, heat treatment and joining influence surface and material condition. Use procedures appropriate to the ordered product and application; do not treat generic temperatures, deformation percentages or inspection sensitivity as universal requirements. For nondestructive examination, confirm whether the method is suitable for the wire diameter and relevant defect type.
Nuclear projects may require material purity and qualification beyond industrial-grade requirements. A medical device requires its own material selection, biological evaluation and regulatory assessment. Neither suitability is established by R60705 alone.
Frequently asked questions
Does R60705 automatically qualify for reactor internals?
No. The project must establish its material specification, traceability and qualification requirements.
Does a wire standard establish corrosion life?
No. Assess the specific environment, geometry and test evidence.
