Grade 1 Titanium Wire for Racking Fixtures: Selection Guide

Grade 1 titanium wire may be considered for hooks and racking fixtures used in surface-treatment processes when the wire, fixture design and bath conditions are suitable. Fixture life and coating results depend on the actual process; material grade alone does not guarantee either outcome.

Define wire and fixture requirements

Grade 1 is unalloyed titanium, UNS R50250. ASTM B863 covers titanium wire including Grade 1. Agree the standard edition, diameter and tolerance, condition, surface, straight lengths or coil, and material certificate. Confirm available dimensions and lead time for the specific inquiry.

Design hook and rack geometry for the workpiece mass, load distribution, temperature and handling. Connections, bends, repeated use and corrosion can affect capacity. A wire diameter alone does not provide a safe working load.

Assess the treatment process

FactorInformation to establish
BathChemical composition, concentration, temperature, additives and operating time.
ContactContact area, electrical connection, cleaning and required coating quality.
FixtureGeometry, load, forming method, joints and inspection intervals.
SurfaceFinish, permitted defects, cleanliness and handling requirements.

Titanium forms a surface oxide that can affect electrical contact; check the assembled fixture and process rather than assuming a particular contact resistance. Compare any surface finish using agreed measurements and workpiece trials.

Quality and application limits

Corrosion performance depends on the complete bath chemistry and operating conditions. Fluoride-containing and some strongly reducing solutions require particular attention. When fixtures are used in medical-device manufacturing, evaluate contamination controls and the finished-device requirements separately. A fixture material does not guarantee biological safety or regulatory clearance.

Frequently asked questions

Does Grade 1 wire guarantee a fixed fixture lifespan?

No. Assess loading, bath chemistry, fabrication and maintenance.

Will one surface finish work for every plating process?

No. Validate contact and coating requirements with the actual process.
