Ultrasonic Testing of Grade 5 Titanium Bars: Inspection Guide
- Gr5 Titanium Bar

Ultrasonic testing (UT) can help assess internal indications in Grade 5 titanium bars when the inspection is specified and performed for the material and geometry. Detection capability and acceptance depend on the agreed procedure, equipment, calibration, coverage and criteria. A material grade alone does not establish an inspection result.
Material and inspection requirements
Grade 5 is Ti-6Al-4V, UNS R56400. ASTM B348/B348M covers annealed titanium and titanium alloy bars and billets, including Grade 5. Identify the material specification and edition separately from the applicable UT method, acceptance standard and any customer-specific requirements. Do not assume that a B348 purchase automatically includes a particular UT procedure, coverage or acceptance class.
Plan the examination
| Item | Define for the order |
|---|---|
| Material | Grade, bar diameter, length, condition, surface and identification. |
| Method | Applicable procedure, equipment, probe, coupling and scan direction. |
| Coverage | Accessible surfaces, examination zones and any areas not examined. |
| Sensitivity | Reference standard, calibration and required sensitivity. |
| Acceptance | Applicable acceptance criteria, report format and treatment of indications. |
Surface condition, geometry, grain structure and access can affect the examination. An ultrasonic indication requires evaluation under the agreed procedure; UT does not prove that a bar is free of every possible defect.
Records and project qualification
Discuss the inspection scope, personnel qualification, equipment requirements and report with the supplier before ordering. Where aerospace or other regulated service requires a specific accreditation or approval, confirm its actual scope and status for the order. A generic statement that every batch receives a particular technique, certification or inspection report is not a substitute for the agreed records.
The report should identify the material and lot, method and procedure, examination coverage, acceptance criteria and results as required by the order. UT results do not replace chemical analysis, mechanical tests or finished-component qualification where those are required.
Frequently asked questions
Does ASTM B348 automatically prescribe the same UT for every bar?
Confirm the ordered UT method and acceptance requirements separately.
Can UT guarantee a defect-free component?
No. Its capability is limited by the method, material, geometry and inspection coverage.
