Grade 4 Titanium Wire for Loaded Industrial Components

Grade 4 titanium wire may be considered for a loaded industrial component when its specified properties, geometry and service environment are suitable. Material strength alone does not establish a safe working load, fatigue life or resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Identify the wire

Grade 4 is unalloyed titanium, UNS R50700. ASTM B863 covers Grade 4 titanium wire within its scope. Specify the contracted edition, diameter, tolerance, material condition, surface and delivery form. Verify lot-specific chemistry and mechanical results against the agreed acceptance criteria.

Grade 4 is often considered when a higher specified strength is required among unalloyed grades. Compare actual requirements for the ordered condition rather than assigning a fixed strength advantage over every Grade 1 or Grade 2 product.

Evaluate static and cyclic loads

Design concernInformation required
Static loadingWire dimensions, component geometry, design load and applicable properties.
Cyclic loadingLoad range, stress ratio, surface, environment and representative fatigue testing.
FormingCondition, bend radius, tooling, springback and trial acceptance.
JoiningApplicable procedure, filler or joining method and inspection.

Wire drawn into a spring, hanger or fastener blank must be evaluated as a finished component. Surface defects, processing and joint design can affect failure behavior. A high tensile strength does not guarantee resistance to cracking.

Corrosion and order records

Assess the actual medium, concentration, temperature, oxygen availability, deposits, crevices and exposure. A salt-spray result or one plant case cannot establish a universal corrosion life. Agree required wire tests, lot traceability and material certificate with the supplier.

Applications in pressure equipment or medical devices require additional design and qualification; a wire certificate does not approve the finished assembly.

Frequently asked questions

Can Grade 4 wire be selected on tensile strength alone?

No. Consider formability, fatigue, environment and component requirements as well.

Does a wire grade guarantee a corrosion rate?

No. Corrosion depends on the actual service conditions.
